Ask Terry Questions When to take Social Security

When to take Social Security

By Terry Savage on August 06, 2023 | Financial Planning / Retirement

All my Google searches on this topic lead me to a discussion of “early,” FRA, or delayed. But my question is a bit different. I am planning to take my SS when I am 70, Sept. 3, 2024. My question is: when do I apply so that I get my first check on time but ALSO am certain that I do not appy too early and they think I am applying as a 69 year old? June 2024? July 2024? August 2024? Thank you for all your work.

This is a great question. There have been so many mix-ups at Social Security, I can understand why you don’t trust them to get it right. But you can apply in the month BEFORE you turn 70, and specifically ask them to start in the month of your birth. However, since they pay one month in arrears, you won’t get your first check until the following month.
So yes, you may miss out on the first check — BUT, it’s a lot better than losing out on the 8% increase you get in your base check by waiting until you are 70!
And if you want to know the proper amount you SHOULD receive, go to www.MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com and pay teh $39 to get the correct amount calculated.
