Where to start investing extra money

Hi Terry, listen to you on WGN and always very interesting. I am 42 and have a good retirement plan and also a Roth IRA. I have paid off all debt except for mortgage which is in great shape.
I have aprox 5K that I would like to start investing short to mid term for hopefully extra income. I was hoping you could suggest a place for me to start. I am willing to educate myself and do the research. I am buying your book as well to get a better understanding of financial matters. I would really appreciate if you could point me in the right direction and I can learn as I go.

Terry Says:  Well, you picked a good time to start — with the market off its highs.  Please read my recent column on dividends (it’s on my website, or just click the green box there to read all my archives on the HuffingtonPost).  Then go to www.BigSafeDividends.com for some ideas of stocks that will provide income as well as — hopefully — gains.  At your age you can hold on to those investments for a long time — even if they decline in the meantime –and buy more.
