Widowed teacher and social security widow benefit

By Terry Savage on January 08, 2025 | Wild Card

If you are a teacher and you spouse who works in the public sector, can the teacher collect a widow social security benefit on their spouses social security? Teachers age is now 60 but was 58 when the spouse died at age 60.
Thank you.

To get the maximum benefit, she really needs to wait until HER full retirement age to collect HIS full retirement benefit. But since he did not reach full retirement age, the calculation might be difficult. I suggest going to https://maximizemysocialsecurity.com/ to get the correct advice in this situation.
The reason this works now is because her benefit will not be reduced because of a teacher’s benefit. So get the correct numbers, and then make a decision about when to claim and how much to expect in the way of benefits, depending on when you claim.
