Wife taking 1/2 of husband’s SS
I am now 75. I have been taking 1/2 of my husband’s SS ($1336) since I retired at 65. Should I now be taking my own SS now. Would it be more than 1/2 of my husband’s SS?
Terry Says
Oh my goodness. This is something you should have calculated many years ago! By law, you should get the larger of your own SS or half of your husbands (while he is alive), and the larger of the two full benefits if he dies before you.
There is an easy way to figure out and compare. Just go to MaximizeMySocialSecurity.com and pay he $49. They will tell you what you should be receiving, since SS makes many calculation mistakes.
