Ask Terry Questions Will vs Trust

Will vs Trust

By Terry Savage on February 09, 2023 | Financial Planning / Retirement

My wife and I watched your video saying a trust is better than a will. It was very informative. A lawyer we talked to says we need both costing 5K. We were really hoping to pay around 2K. Do we need both? Thanks

Well, you might have noticed that those with a Revocable Living Trust also need a “pour-over” will — which basically says “anything I didn’t specifically name/title in the trust should go into the trust at my death.” So your car, or the balance of your household checking account, for example, would be put into your RLT and distributed according to the instructions in the trust.
As for the price of this estate plan, a lot depends on the complexity of your issues, and the depth of advice you need. You can search for other estate planning attorneys at https://search-attorneys.com/
But if you live in a large city, that top price is not out of line.

Oh and by the way, for those reading this answer, here is a link to that video – on my home page.
