Working from home claim on taxes

By Terry Savage on December 14, 2021 | Wild Card

Hi Terry, I watch you on WGN all the time, love the tips. I have been working from home since Covid started, we were told now to clear out our desks that we are basically remote workers now. Can I claim anything on my taxes when I file in 2022 , part of my internet, electric, etc., work related items like a desk and chair?

Terry Says

Not likely. Especially if you get a W-2 form. The home office deduction is generally allowed only for independent contractors or “gig”‘workers. And even then there are restrictions, and the deduction makes you more likely to face an audit.

Here’s a recent and very comprehensive report on that subject from CNBC: https://www.cnbc.com/2021/12/03/who-can-claim-home-office-tax-deduction-if-they-worked-from-home.html
