Self-Employed unemployment filing
Hi Terry,
I am a self-employed hairdresser. I rent a salon suite and work for myself and by myself; I have no employees. Due to the COVID-19 situation I cannot work now and have no income. I’ve heard on the news and read on your website that the CARES ACT “…includes those who were previously not eligible for unemployment, including part-time employees, freelancers, independent contractors, gig workers, and the self-employed”.
My question is: do you have any idea how I can apply for this provision? I live in Illinois and the state website gives no information on how someone who falls into this category can apply. Any info you have would be GREATLY appreciated!

To the best of my knowledge, now you can just go in or better, online, and APPLY. The will adjust their terminology to provide the benefits. Obviously, they are swamped with applications so plan that it will take a while to get your first check. Please write back if you have a problem and I will try to pursue it — although I already tried to contact the department’s media number and can’t get a response!
