Ask Terry Questions bank fraud

bank fraud

By Terry Savage on November 05, 2026 | Wild Card

I paid $25 via personal check for each of 5 visits to television-ad doc. They cashed 3 of the checks, then went into my checking account and took 5 payments of $25. It took numerous calls and 3 months to get a refund. After another 1.5 months they cashed the 4th check (after they had already collected from the checking account. Took numerous calls to get that refund. (Alerted my bank to the issue, but they were no help.) Paid final bill with a cashier’s check, since I can’t trust them with my personal check. They will not put calls through to billing and have not yet cashed the check after 30 days. I can’t report the check stolen, missing or reissue it for 90 days, by then bill will be long overdue. 1. Should I change banks? 2. Should I report this tv-ad doc (Joint Relief Institute) to Better Business Bureau?

I don’t know what company you are talking about, but it sounds like you were caught up in a scam. The first thing you should do is report this fraud to the Federal Trade Commission.
You can report fraud directly to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, the official U.S. government portal for reporting scams, fraud, and bad business practices.

Then call the company and tell them you have reported them to the FTC — AND that you have contacted a local newspaper columnist who is interested.

If I were you, I would put a stop on the last check you paid them, since it has not yet been cashed. If this appears on your credit report — which I doubt they will pursue — you can add a note about the scam.
