Stimulus check & past due child support
Hi Terry, I have a question regarding past due child support that my ex husband owes me & the stimulus payment. He owes me a substantial amount of money in back due child support from an old court order & currently pays a small amount monthly on it. I’ve seen online that governor’s in other states are saying that if anyone owes past due child support there will be an offset through the treasury department & those individuals will not get one. I haven’t heard much about this in Illinois though. My ex also owns his own business so I’m not sure how he files his taxes as I haven’t received any tax refunds of his in almost 8 years. I’m guessing he makes it look like he owes every year since then. Do you have any information on this?
Terry Says
Even if he owes taxes, he should be paying child support. The Care Act mandates states to check on child support status before ending stimulus checks. This doesn’t mean you will get his — but only that he won’t get one!
Now, honestly, I don’t know how they are going to do this cross-checking and get that money out to the correct people. And your “ex” will never let you know he got a check.
But this is my most HOT BUTTON financial issue– deadbeat parents!
So when things settle down, I’m going to ask WGN and maybe the Tribune if they might like to publish a list of them in the newspaper!!!
