Ask Terry Questions Stimulus checks and dependents over 17

Stimulus checks and dependents over 17

By Terry Savage on April 06, 2020 | Wild Card

Hi what if you are a head of household and claimed your college children who are over 17 as dependents on your tax return? Is the parent or the child eligible for the stimulus check? Based on the registration questions, it seems like neither the parent or the child is eligible for the $500 stimulus amount.
Thank you.

Terry Says

Exactly. So DON’T CLAIM YOUR OVER-17 KIDS AS DEPENDENTS! (Or amend your return ASAP and remove them as dependents.) Then they can register and file to get their own $1200 stimulus check. Dependents over 17 don’t get you the $500 check.
