Stimulus checks for dependent over 17

By Terry Savage on April 09, 2020 | Wild Card

Granddaughter, age 18, filed her 2019 tax already, as a dependent of her parents. I heard you on the radio discuss this. What can she do in order to receive stimulus money? She had about $7000 income plus was a student until graduation from high school.

Terry Says

It’s the PARENTS that declare “dependents.” Since she is over 17 it does the parents no good to list her as a dependent. So they should amend their return and remove her as a dependent. Then she will qualify for a check! But hurry before they start cross-checking her return against her parents’. No one listed as a dependent gets a check.
