Ask Terry Questions Paycheck protection program

Paycheck protection program

By Terry Savage on May 17, 2020 | Wild Card

I’m a dog walker- working about 20% of my normal. Owner got a PPP to distribute to us- not for working anymore than we are now-just distributing the funds (there is no more work)* Can I opt out without any detrimental impact to owner or myself and stay on unemployment? The PPP payout is an average of the last 12 months and MUCH less than I was making the last 3 months

Terry Says

Sorry, but if the owner got PPP and offered you your “job back” then you cannot certify for unemployment. If it’s any consolation, LOTS of people are angry at their bosses for taking the program, because they make much more on unemployment!
Did the boss do this to get his/her own salary paid? They might have been better off turning down the PPP and getting their own self-employed unemployment benefit. Ask if they might do this before you give up your benefits!
