Ask Terry Questions unemployment/stimulus

unemployment/stimulus

By Terry Savage on May 17, 2020 | Wild Card

I got a letter from IDES saying I have a debit card pending and it should be issued within the next 7 days, that was April 13. I have been e-mailing them, been on their website, called the 2 #’s on the letter and still can’t find out what is going on with my payments. I know they are not large because I work part time at 70 and have never filed for unemployment before. I know they are crazy busy but, it’s been awhile. I also heard about a stimulus check for a deceased spouse ??

Ugh — you are trapped in IDES hell! And you’re not alone, as I have heard from so many who are in this same spot. They are adding people to their call center, and I can only urge you to keep trying to get through. But I don’t hold out a lot of hope.
Re the deceased spouse, you may get a check if you filed a joint return in 2018 or 2019. They say you are supposed to send it back. But there is a lot of legal controversy over whether they can do that, or will get around to doing that. They certainly aren’t doing a very good job of getting money out to people who do deserve the payments. If you’re stuck for money, and if it comes, I’d deposit it and wait to see if they ask for it back individually.
