Unemployment qualification

By Terry Savage on July 28, 2020 | Wild Card

My husband is in sales and is strictly commission although his company takes out taxes, insurance etc. Since Covid his income has dropped dramatically but us still employed. I’m wondering if he would qualify for unemployment. I searched and couldn’t find anything just about “gig” workers. Thank you.

Terry Says

Yes– first you have to apply for traditional unemployment and be denied – because he still has a job. (Or they might accept him because of a substantial reduction in earnings!). Then he has to go on and apply for PUA (self-employed) reduction in wages. Either way — if you can get through the system — he should be eligible for back benefits to the date of his reduction.
