Federal & State Taxes Owed
Hi Terry! IRS is still processing my return but I owe them $3706 in Federal and State taxes after working as an independent contractor for the 2019 tax year. Unfortunately, I am not able to pay that in full. I heard about the payment plan IRS is offering but I wanted to know your opinion on what is the smartest step to take here. Also, can I set up the payment plan even if the IRS is still processing my file? Thank you and God Bless!

I think you need some legal representation to try to deal with this situation– not a lawyer but an enrolled agent, who can represent you to work out a deal.
But first, contact the IRS Taxpayer Advocate service linked here. That may be a less expensive start.
And yes, I would contact them now — as the line for help is likely to be a long one.
