Unemployment issue– just switched jobs before layoffs

By Terry Savage on August 10, 2020 | Wild Card

Hi Terry, my nephew left his job in NY to take a position at a private school in Chicago. The day before he was to start he was as called and told he wouldn’t be hired do to covid. Can’t collect unemployment because he resigned, and has no insurance, are there any benefits he can receive? Can a suit be brought against the school ? Thanks Terry, love you on ch9

Terry Says

Oh, that’s a terrible situation. And unfortunately, there is no way he will get unemployment, and unless the school actually signed a contract with them, there is no way they will pay him for this lost job.
Now he has to get through this and start over. I hope he has a safe place to live (maybe with you?) and can earn some money perhaps as an Amazon delivery driver, just to make ends meet.
This will be over sometime, and he can get back to his profession. This is just one of many lives terribly interrupted. So give him what support you can — and know that he is young enough to get through this.
