Ask Terry Questions Early Retirement and Unemployment

Early Retirement and Unemployment

By Terry Savage on September 14, 2020 | Wild Card

If I felt compelled by my employer to take an Early Retirement plan and severance due to downsizing within the company because of Covid, would I still be entitled to collect unemployment benefits? I live in Illinois. I’m still looking for a new job.

Terry Says

Actually, I don’t think you’ll get unemployment on that basis — though you can always try. That’s why employers offer “early retirement packages” — so it doesn’t count against them in the unemployment money they must deposit.
