Unemployment extension confusion

By Terry Savage on September 14, 2020 | Wild Card

Hello Terry,

After having recently exhausted Illinois’s 26 week unemployment program, I was notified by mail that I was eligible for another 13 to 20 weeks of unemployment benefits. The letter stated that I should certify on September 1st. I successfully made the certification call but came away confused. The automated recording stated that I need to mail or fax a list of where I applied for jobs during the second half of August. This is the first I’ve heard of this requirement. Terry, I have no idea where I should mail this list nor do I have a fax number to utilize. I can’t find any information on this requirement anywhere on the IDES site. I left a message at IDES on September 1st but haven’t heard back from them. I want to do the right thing. Can you provide any assistance?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Well, part of certifying is showing that you are indeed trying to find employment. I’m surprised you weren’t asked about this before.
The best I can do is give you the link to the Unemployment Insurance Handbook, which explains everything.

BUT the system doesn’t really work — and all you can do is keep trying to call. I had a number for a while to get through, but I don’t have it any more. So keep trying to certify on any day, and also leave your number for a call back — which might never happen!
