IDES Notice of Overpayment of PUA Benefits
Hi Terry,
On 12/7/2020 I received an overpayment notice from IDES for the period of 3/21-7/18. I sent in everything the asked for in May when unemployment insurance was available for self employed people. At the end of July they dropped my unemployment to $198/week and began deducting $50 out of that for overpayment. Now they are saying I owe them $4504.50 by 1/5/2021. There is no way I can pay this back! My company is hanging on by a toehold. What are my options?
Thanks in advance!

You are not alone! IDES has sent out thousands of these letters judging by my mail and blog posts. It is THEIR mistake. Yes, they can deduct money from your ongoing benefits. And they could even take money from any future state income tax refund. But it is not clear that they will be able to start legal proceedings against any citizen for their own mistake!! This will continue to be a headline issue. My advice is that if you don’t have the money, just sit tight. It is THEIR mistake –I repeat. And the next move is theirs. Wait to see what they do next. I have complained to the Governor about this inept agency and now they have added insult to injury!
