Ask Terry Questions Stimulus check

Stimulus check

By Terry Savage on March 25, 2021 | Wild Card

Hi Terry,
I have a son who used to live in a group home and now he lives with me. He received a stimulus check that was sent to his previous place of residence and the check was made out to him and the place. I called them to see how to handle it and they said sign and send back to them so they would reissue another check. I sent it certified mail and it was sent 8 weeks ago. They said they never received it. Not sure if lost in the mail or not. I cannot find the tracking number. Can you advise me how I should handle this situation? It was his 2nd stimulus check and now we haven’t received his $1400.00 check and wonder if IRS is going to send the check the same way. He has an account and is set up for direct deposit. If he receives check same way; would I be able to deposit the check with his name and theirs or do I mail it back to IRS? Not sure how to handle this; but I want to make sure he receives both checks. I appreciate any advise on this matter. Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,

It is VERY unusual that a stimulus check would be made out to TWO recipients. What other government benefits are they getting in his name???
For the original stimulus check, you need to file a “lost benefits’ report. Read this article on Kiplingers for a complete explanation of what to do to get those first checks — either the $1200 and/or the $600.

But now it is time to get the name of the group home OFF your son’s accounts — unless they are his legal guardian.
Did you file a 2019 return and declare him as a dependent?
Have yu filed your 2020 return yet, and are you declaring him a dependent? If not, do so immediately so you will get the $1400. And notify the group home that it is a federal crime to steal a stimulus check and yo are contact the Feds and reporting it stolen!
