Ask Terry Questions Stimulus checks

Stimulus checks

By Terry Savage on March 24, 2021 | Wild Card

I’m trying to get stimulus money for an 84 yr. German legal alien and his 53 yr. bipolar son. They both have social security numbers, both are on Medicaid, have no computer, nor a TV. I’m also trying to help get retirement money for the 84 yr. who is a Retired Head Baker and paid into the system for over 17 years. Because his Visa or Green card expired Social Security has denied him. His physical condition is not that good and it was difficult for him to go downtown. They are now getting Meals on Wheels. Can’t afford rent, lease expired, and will probably be homeless after this Covid lifts and courts open. No family here nor in Germany. I’m just a friend trying to help. Thank you.

Terry Says

Whew, I don’t know where to start. If he doesn’t have a green card anymore, then he is NOT a legal alien, and likely NOT able to collect stimulus money or Social Security. So you have to start by getting his green card reinstated. That will take an immigration attorney, or legal aid, since they cannot afford to pay. The green card is the key that opens the door to all benefits. If it just expired because it was caught up in the slow Trump immigration machinery then maybe an immigration attorney can shake this loose. Otherwise, only churches and civic organizations can help.
In Chicago you might contact the Greater Chicago Legal Clinic, which has a specialty in immigration law.
