Collection from a debt collector that I do not recognize
Hello,
I received a letter in the mail that I had to owe a debt to a company that I did not do business with. It is from the collection agency of SublettPearson PLC from Roanoke, VA. The creditor name is Member One Federal Credit Union also in Roanoke, VA. Both I never heard before.
In the letter, they said a judgment was rendered in favor of our client, Member One Federal Credit Union on February 19, 2016. Please contact our office within the next 10 days to discuss the resolution of the matter. The judgement could adversely affect your ability to obtain credit or a loan. Also, interest is accruing daily from 6/12/15 at a rate of 15% annually. I’m responsible for any accured interest from the date of this letter until the account is paid in full.
Principal Amount: $277.25
Attorney’s fees: 85.31
Accrued Interest: $280.77
Costs: 59.00
Total balance due
as of 12/17/21 $702.33
I looked on the three credit bereaus my credit report. I found no collection info, no listing of Member One Federal Credit Union. When Equifax had that hacking incident back in 2017, I had all 3 credit bereaus freeze my credit. I did have a printout of my credit report and there is no listing of Member One Federal Credit Union going back to 2010.
I was wondering other than reporting them to the States Attorney, what other action should I do? It seems very fishy that it took them this long to contact me, just to collect on the accrued interest. I looked on Google reviews, and both companies don’t have a good track record in satisfying customers. Even being downright rude and insulting to them .
Thank you very much for your help. I been listening to you for years. I really like when you are on Channel 7, WGN News giving sound advice. Have a Happy Holiday!

This looks like a scam to me — or a huge error. I suggest copying the letter (keeping the original) and sending a letter simply sayng “you must have me confused with someone else” — but “if you pursue this collection I will contact the FBI regarding this scam”
Send the letter certified mail, return receipt requested — and make sure you get a copy of the signature card.
Also, check your credit report at www.AnnualCreditReport.com to make sure this is not on YOUR credit report. Check at least one of the three bureaus.
