Social security on spouse’s account

By Terry Savage on September 04, 2022 | Financial Planning / Retirement

Can I get Social security payment from my hubby even tho I get a pension. He is collecting his now can I get half of his?

Terry Says

Do you have a Social Security record of your own? Check at www.SSA.gov. The fact that you are receiving a pension indicates you might be eligible (unless you were in public service and did not qualify on your own).
You can collect up to 50% of your spouse’s benefit — if you are at least age 62.
But you might want to wait until YOUR full retirement age. If you decide to begin collecting spousal benefits before your full retirement age, you can expect to receive a lower amount. If your full retirement age is 66 and you begin to receive spousal benefits at age 62, you will receive 30% of your spouse’s monthly benefit. If you claim spousal benefits at age 65, you will receive slightly less than 50% of your spouse’s monthly benefit, depending on the exact month you start collecting payments.
