Social Security
Hi Terry,
I have been on SS Disability since 2008. I hope to receive a lung transplant soon, after which I may no longer be determined to be disabled and will lose my benefits as well as Medicare since I am only 62. If I wait to collect regular Social Security until age 70, will my benefits go up? Or will I receive the same amount I received on disability, since I started taking that at age 48.
Thanks!

Whew, that’s a tough situation. First, I really hope you receive the lung transplant. And I know you will feel a whole lot better. But that may not be reason to terminate your disability benefits. Your disability benefits will convert to Social Security when you reach full retirement age (about 68). I doubt they will cut off your benefits and expect you to go back to work with a lung transplant. If they do attempt that, please write me immediately and I will find a tough lawyer who will go to bat for you!
Bottom line: stick with the disability benefits. Don’t take SS early. And yes, you will get a LOT more if you wait until your full retirement age.
