Ask Terry Questions Social Security and WEP

Social Security and WEP

By Terry Savage on December 23, 2022 | Financial Planning / Retirement

I am a retired teacher in Illinois with 17 years of teaching and receive a state Teacher’s Retirement. I also worked private sector on and off for approximately 10 years in total. Will I be able to receive any social security for the years I paid in? How is the WEP figured for teachers who have worked both private jobs and then as a state teacher? I do have 4 quarters of working in Social Security.

Because of the offset, you likely won’t get very much. You need 10 years of covered work (40 credits) to qualify for Social Security. But feel free to contact ssa.gov and ask them if you get anything at all.
