Question about the number of payments credited by a student loan

By Terry Savage on July 03, 2023 | College Savings / Student Loans

Hi Terry,

Prior to the pandemic our daughter, who is a nurse for a non profit was making her student loan payments regularly. I believe she has been paying on the loan for 3 years. The loan was around 47,000. She is in an income driven payment plan. After considering our situation, we gifted her 30,000 to pay on the loan, leaving her balance of 17,000. It is recorded that she has 62 payments made. I understand the terms are 10 years and 120 payments. It is unclear to me if the 30,000 has been fully counted in her payments. So two questions. Can she ask for an audit of her payments again to ensure the count is accurate and reflects this lump sum? And while I don’t think she is at 120 payments, but if she makes120 payments before the ten years is up, would this mean she would have to wait the remainder of the ten years before she meets the criteria for PSLF ?

I am going to direct you to Student Loan expert Rae Kaplan at www.FinancialRelief.com. She has the resources to deal with specific questions. BUT, if the loan is paid off, you don’t get forgiveness!! That’s only for the balance amount left over AFTER all those 120 payments are made!
