Value of dental insurance for seniors
Terry,
Have you researched the cost/benefits of dental insurance for married couple in their late 70’s?
Are generally worth the time, effort and cost if you have questionable teeth?
Long time reader and listener,
Terry Says
Gosh, the jury is out on this one. It depends on the policy.
Most policies cover preventive care, such as regular teeth cleaning — but may not cover X-rays. Still, regular cleanings could help prevent other expensive problems.
Most policies won’t cover major dental work, such as orthodontics or implants or other major procedures.
While I’ve never heard of a dental policy that doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions, your coverage might be denied after they review your dental history when you make a claim. Again, it’s all in the wording of the policy.
Be sure to check carefully for co-payments, pre-approvals, deductibles, annual maximums, and other limiting factors.
And not all dentists accept dental insurance, or will go through the paperwork to help you make a claim.
Bottom lines: The premiums are expensive, and the insurers are in it to make money, so they price accordingly!
