No SS for county retirees

By Terry Savage on September 16, 2025 | Insurance & Annuities

Why are those that were employed by cook county have to pay for medicare? I was employed for 30 years and not once did the county tell us that we would have to pay 1/3 of our retirement to medicare. This year I’ll pay over $8,400and my pension is only $3,600/ month. If I live to be 90y/o I’ll be paying more into medicare than my monthly income. I could wind up homeless all because when the county started taking out, they didn’t grandfather the senior employees in. I’m 69 at this time. I’d be better off dead than alive! What to do??

Terry Says

I’m not an expert in Cook County retiree benefits — but EVERYONE pays for Medicare. The monthly premiums are deducted from Social Security benefits for most people. I assume you are getting a pension, but perhaps not SS?

Please check back with your HR office to find out if you are overpaying for some reason.
You might check for alternative plans — such as Medicare Advantage, if you qualify.
