Ssi disability

By Terry Savage on November 04, 2025 | Insurance & Annuities

Hi Terry. I’m 64. I have worked construction all my life. My back is damaged and I’d like to collect disability but lawyers are saying I have to have been out of work 5 months before. I work for myself and simply can’t keep lifting drywall and other tasks. Is it possible I can be eligible?

Terry Says

Even if you could get Disability — and that can take a couple of years — it would be replaced by your earned Social Security benefit at your full retirement age — 67. I wish there were something less strenuous you could do for the next couple of years.
