Small Business Special Enrollment

By Terry Savage on December 04, 2025 | Insurance & Annuities

Terry
First time writer but avid reader. I was a board certified bankruptcy attorney. Also taught financial education to high school students.
Your column appeared Sunday in my local paper titled “Lower health costs with small business plan”. Formed my own mediation practice so I am in the Marketplace. I asked my healthcare broker about the small business special enrollment. My wife assist me in my mediation practice so I wanted to hire her as an employee. My broker tells me that my wife is not eligible to be my second employee with me.
True or false?
Thank you for your time and your great column

And that is the savage truth!

Terry Says

You can’t do it THIS year, because you would have had to pay her, and pay quarterly employer taxes for her. But you can certainly set this up for NEXT year! YOu need to work with your accountant to make your wife qualified as an employee — no matter how little you pay her. Then next year you can use this program to get a great health insurance plan for 2027.
