Ask Terry Questions Medicare number change

Medicare number change

By Terry Savage on May 26, 2026 | Insurance & Annuities

FYI, I received a letter from Medicare. They said they “found an issue with your Medicare number. To protect your identity and prevent fraud, we’re giving you a new card with a new Medicare Number.” I immediately assumed this letter was not legitimate. So I called and they verified that the letter was legitimate. What a pain to change my number with all my doctors. It’s always something! I wonder how often this happens?

Terry Says

They have changed everyone’s Medicare number, which used to be based on your Social Security number. Just give your new card to your physician’s office when you go. And make sure your Medicare number is updated with your supplement provider and Part D drug plan.
Yep, it’s a real pain!
