Ask Terry Questions Parent plus loan

Parent plus loan

By Terry Savage on August 10, 2026 | College Savings / Student Loans

Hi Terry,
Per your suggestion I applied for the IBR payment plan on my parent plus loan and I only did my income, I am married but the loan is in my name only. I received an email saying my payment is $0 for the next 12 months but if I wanted to not accrue interest to pay that amount monthly which would be $562.00 a month. My current balance is around $95,000. I spoke with an advisor at Nelnet and she said I need to re-aply in 12 months to continue the $0 payment. My question is do I make those intredt payments which are very high for my income, I’m on social security, or just let the balance keep getting higher? I understand that since the loan is in my name that it cannot be passed on to my husband or children when I die. Please advise. I really appreciate your knowledge in this matter.
Have a great day!!
