Federal tax refund

By Terry Savage on August 10, 2026 | Wild Card

Hi Terry, 2025 was the first year both my husband and I had income from our retirements. We were very conservative in our withholdings. We had heard many a horror story. Our refund was close to $18,000. We also filed the beginning of February. Our accountant said with such a large amount and filing so early it might flag our return. (Fraud mainly/someone using our ssn as a scam). We did anyway and have yet to receive our refund. Each month we get a letter telling us they are reviewing our return but there are many in the stack to review. We have called the numbers they provided on the letters and get nowhere. It’s usually a recording that provides only status. Status which is pending or in review. Our accountant doesn’t have any access to the IRS either. Any suggestions?
Thank you for your time. I’ve followed you for years from being on channel 5 to listening to you on the radio.

Because you — and many others — raised this issue, I started digging into it. YOu’re not alone! This column was just posted: https://www.terrysavage.com/waiting-for-irs-refund/

I reached out to the IRS several times, but they would not give details of how many refunds have been delayed, or the dollar amounts. I’ve included some advice for next year, but there’s no telling how long it will take to get this year’s refund. At least, they should pay you interest from the date you submitted your identity proof.
