Ask Terry Questions bright start program

bright start program

By Terry Savage on September 26, 2026 | College Savings / Student Loans

My husband started a Bright Start Plan for our grandson, my husband passed away in 2025. I contacted Bright Start to change the plan to my daughter’s name, they denied that request stating that plan would could only be transferred to me because that was the way it was set up. I am 76 and I thought my daughter would be the one to over see the account, I was advised that they suspended the account, is there any remedy to this situation? It has been a nightmare settling, dealing with all the different accounts under my husband’s name, I was trying to avoid my children having to deal with that situation, any input will be greatly appreciated, thank you.

OK, first contact BrightStart again and tell them to transfer the plan into your name. You have a lot on your plate, and you can worry about the next step (after your death) later. In fact, when you do this be sure to ask them to put your daughter’s name on the account as the successor owner (just as your husband put your name as successor.)

I dont’ know what you mean by “suspended” the account. The money should still be there — and still be growing. If you still can’t get this resolved please write back to the email you receive saying yoru question has been answered, and include your phone number.
