Ask Terry Questions Medicare Part D

Medicare Part D

By Terry Savage on October 22, 2026 | Insurance & Annuities

I have original Medicare, Medigap and Medicare Part D. I use the comparison tool on the Medicare website to compare Part D plans every year as I’ve found price can vary widely from year over year. I only take two prescription medications so it is pretty easy to compare. What I’ve found where they get me are unexpected drugs. How in the world can I check coverage and costs for drugs I don’t know now that I will have to take in the future. One example is I recently developed a persistent rash from an unknown source and the two creams originally prescribed only eased it, but did not eradicate it. My dermatologist then prescribed a cream not covered at all by my drug plan. Out of pocket cost would have been $1000. (No, not a typo.) So she prescribed another cream that also wasn’t covered at all by my plan. Fortunately, the out of pocket cost was only $80. I say only as I am fortunate enough to be in a financial position to afford that, but many are not. Any guidance for such situations would be appreciated.

This is a flaw in Part D coverage. Any medicines added during the year may not be covered in your plan! Or they may be expensive, and only partly covered, so you have to pay until you hit the cap — $2400 in 2027. And, you can’t plan ahead for that!
