Ask Terry Questions 600 dollar stimulus payment

600 dollar stimulus payment

By Terry Savage on February 13, 2021 | Wild Card

In your January column you said 18 year olds claimed by their parents as dependents could file a 2020 return if they had income. If an 18 year old who is a senior in high school has reported interest income from a uniform gift to minors account can this be used to file the return to get the $600.00 and can they still be counted as a dependent on the parents return?

Terry Says

Well, he has to document that he provides at least 50% of his own support in order to qualify for a stimulus payment based on an independent return. that doesn’t seem to be the case here. If he were independent, you would NOT declare him as a dependent. And he would file his own return. but at this point, all you get is the dependent payment.
