Ask Terry Questions A collection

A collection

By Terry Savage on March 13, 2026 | Credit/Debt

We had a dispute with my son’s college apartment, he changed schools but we still had to pay for his room. We occasionally stopped in to check apartment, as a few things were still there. Maintenance went into his room and threw away his personal items. Mgmt knew it was unoccupied but we were still paying monthly. After lease was fulfilled we were charged $215 for a ripped carpet replacement, I proved the carpet was in that condition when we moved in. The items that were thrown out were approximately the same amount ($215). I tried to reason with them and call it a wash, but they refused and sent to collections. Now my 23 y/o has a negative on his credit report. They never reimbursed us for his personal items as they stated we abandoned apartment, they fully knew the situation. If I wasn’t paying for his room, Eletric and other expenses I could understand, but we were paying regardless. My question is “How do I get this negative off his credit report”? $215 is ruining his credit.

Thank you

Never have a financial fight over a small amount to prove a point. It just isn’t worth it. And your son is paying the price.

The collection will drop odd his credit report in a few years. In the meantime he should get a credit card in his own name, use it regularly and pay IN FULL and ON TIME every month to build a new, better credit history.

If he can’t get a card because of this issue, go to CreditCards.com and search for a “secured card” — backed by a savings deposit at the issuing bank. Then give him the money for the deposit! You owe him that after ruining his credit!
