Adult children under 26 who are in college.

By Terry Savage on May 05, 2021 | College Savings / Student Loans

Hi Terry, my kids are 21 and 25 , live at home a d will be transferring to 4 year universities. My question is: since we took the tax exemption or write off last year on the kids, how long before they can apply for government assistance for school? Is it still a full year off their parents taxes? Any suggestions so they don’t graduate drowning in debt? Thank you very much!

Terry Says

What do you mean — government assistance for school? If they want financial aid, they have to be full-time students and file the FAFSA form. Go to StudentAid.gov to learn all you need to know.

But this is something you should have considered years ago. Consult with the financial aid office of the schools they will be attending. They will guide you to all aid, work-study programs, and other assistance to pay for college.

And, you didn’t ask, but it’s time they grow up and take responsibility for their own future–including their education costs!
