Buget Credit Card Debt
My husband died recently leaving me with $30,000.00 in debt. All in my name. What is the best way to pay off all this debt? He died one month after cancer treatment so a lot was not discussed and some are medical and living expenses.
I am 77 years old and this is keeping me up nights. I have an adult son who has Aspergers, he is high functioning and gets SSI which does help his expenses.
Thank You, I listen to you on WGN and trust your advise.

Well, first of all if this is HIS medical debt it is likely NOT your responsibility! So you need someone qualified to look over this debt and tell you what you really owe. Of course, the hospitals and medical providers could sue his estate (if you owned your home in joint name, for example). But if he had no other assets and it was his debt they would just write it off. And given your situation, much of this debt will likely be written off anyway.
What you need now is someone to look over those bills and tell you your rights and obligations. You can get that trusted advice by calling 800-388-2227 — and you will be connected to the nearest local office of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling. They will –over the phone — do counseling that will help you deal with these bills properly. Let me know if you still have issues after that meeting.
