common law marriage in Illinois & social security

By Terry Savage on May 13, 2022 | Wild Card

My partner and I have been together for 43 years but we are not married. He is 86 and I am 65. If he passes before I do, am I eligible to receive some of his social security benefits?

Terry Says

No. Social security only recognizes legal marriages. It’s not too late to do it now!!
