Coverdell ESA vs 529

I am retired and have four grandchildren 5yo and under. I would like to put a small amount of money in an educational account for each of them every month.
I have heard you speak very positively about 529 Plans. But, what are your thoughts about Coverdell ESA’s?
Do they have any downsides?
