Ask Terry Questions Credit Card Debt of Deceased parent

Credit Card Debt of Deceased parent

By Terry Savage on April 10, 2022 | Credit/Debt

Who is responsible for the credit card debt of a deceased parent – one credit card – in parent’s name – no spouse

Terry Says

No one! This is considered “unsecured debt” and it does not transfer. The correct thing to do is to send the credit card company a copy of the death certificate, and a note with the bill saying the person is deceased, had no assets, and the estate is closed.
