Credit card for newbie

By Terry Savage on February 23, 2021 | Credit/Debt

I am a married 57 year old. My husband and I have a shared credit card- he is primary. I want to get my own card or at least be the primary on one. We both work. Is there a particular credit card you’d recommend. We don’t care a balance on the one we have. Thank you for any information you may have.

The first thing I would do is contact the card issuing company is to add your name, not only as a signer but an authorized user of the existing card. Assuming you’ve had it for a while, the longevity of that card will contribute to your own credit history.
And then you should open a “secured” credit card in your own name. Use this link to find companies that offer this credit opportunity to people with no credit. You deposit a small amount — $500-$1500 in a savings or mm account at an issuing bank, and that becomes your line of credit for a Visa or MasterCard. Then you must use it every month, pay in full and on time, and you will develop your own credit. Pretty soon, you’ll receive more offers of credit cards! Be careful.

Click on this link at CreditCards.com to get directly to the page that offers secured cards.

And then be sure to check your own credit report to see that your spending habits are being reported in your own name!
