Ask Terry Questions Credit card inactivity

Credit card inactivity

By Terry Savage on July 08, 2023 | Credit/Debt

Hi Terry,
I have a credit card that I paid off over a year ago. I have not used it since then. I just received a letter
telling me that my card will be closed due to inactivity. Its says I have 50 days to use it or it will be closed. What should I do? I have good credit and do not want to use it anymore, but I don’t want it to negatively impact my credit score.
Thank you,

Terry Says

If you intend to apply for credit soon, you might want to keep it active by making a purchase and paying it off in full and on time.
And if it’s your longest-held card, you might also want to keep it.
But if your credit score is high –over 740– closing this one unused card won’t make much of a difference in your score to close it.
