Ask Terry Questions credit cards

credit cards

We have too many credit cards. We only use a few, the rest sit in a drawer. I worry about keeping track in case of fraud, of misplacing them. I just don’t want all of them, and despite warnings about credit score impact (mine and husband’s are ea over 800)I want to cancel some. Can I?

Terry Says:  Yes, you can.  But be sure to keep mostly the ones you have held longest so that your credit score is not negatively impacted.  Just write the card company a letter, explaining that you want to close your account.  Ask  them to notify the credit bureaus that the account was “closed at the request of the cardholder.”  Then get a copy of your credit report at www.AnnualCreditReport.com in a month or so, to make sure the information is reflected there.  Close just one or two at a time, until you get down to the level you are comfortable with —
