Ask Terry Questions credit cards

credit cards

By Terry Savage on October 31, 2017 | Credit/Debt

How do I go about canceling credit cards I haven't used in years and don't intend to use again? I have 2 that I use if needed but have a few I never use. Thank you.

Make sure you keep your oldest cards, since they add to your credit score.  But the simplest way is to contact the card issuer and request a closure.  Use the phone number on your bill, or the one on the back of your card.  Don't be surprised if they try to talk you into keeping it!  Ask them to report it to the bureaus as "closed at the request of the consumer."  Then check your credit report next month to make sure that has been done.  And cut up the card before throwing it out!
