Ask Terry Questions credit cards and credit protection after death

credit cards and credit protection after death

By Terry Savage on January 08, 2021 | Credit/Debt

My husband died 5 months ago. Should I close or cut up his credit cards? They are paid off. Two were for his small business and 2 personal. I have my own card. Also, should I get a credit protection plan in both our names?

Terry Says

You don’t need a credit protection plan. You need to put a freeze on your credit at all three bureaus. Links are in this article.

But you should contact the card issuers to notify them of his death — unless you are also a co-owner of the card. In that case just remove his name. It’s a good thing that you have one card in your own name. Don’t just cut them up. l Then check his credit report in a couple of months to see that this is done.
