Data Breech -Credit and Identity Monitoring

By Terry Savage on October 03, 2024 | Wild Card

We have received multiple notices of data breeches . More arrived today. (These from Change Healthcare. For an incident occurring in February of this year, reported to their business customers in June and now in October we receive the notice. ) (As you have said: everyone should assume their information is out there. ) The notices of data breeches typically offer free credit monitoring. (Sometimes (This happened with Duly Healthcare. ) the enrollment code does not work, has expired, or includes an offer for services that the monitoring company no longer provides – oh joy! -such fun! Rhetorical question: Can I get back the time I wasted trying to enroll? Why are we not automatically enrolled once the breech is discovered? ) The hitch to enrolling is you must agree to indemnify and hold harmless the provider (evidently forever since they require this to remain in effect after the free monitoring period ends. Is it worth it for us to be signing up for this (from multiple providers)? Are we foregoing important rights by signing up? These firms require personal information ( social security numbers, etc. )which they require the right to retain. Is this further compromising our financial security? Do we have any recourse? Is any group lobbying congress to hold the firms who don’t adequately protect our information accountable? Is anyone successful in holding the firms accountable in civil or criminal court? What is the best way to remedy this situation ? We monitor our bank accounts at least monthly but how and how often must we monitor healthcare accounts? Sorry for the rant. It all gets more and more frustrating .
