Delaying enrollment in Medicare A

By Terry Savage on February 20, 2025 | Insurance & Annuities

I’m 65 and turn 66 in July. I have health insurance through Cigna provided by my wife’s employer (Aldi). I have not signed up for part A. I was told by two Medicare specialists, who sign people up for Medicare, that I didn’t have to sign up for type A or contact Medicare. I spoke to Cigna, and they also said I need not sign up for part A. I was told there is a form that will have to be filled out to prove I had credible medical insurance when I do sign up for Medicare. I’ve also seen articles by AARP and even Medicare.gov that confirm this, or so I think. I delayed signing up for part A because I was having major surgery weeks before I turned 65 and didn’t want to cause billing confusion. Your website information on Medicare enrollment makes me think I’m wrong on this. Am I wrong and have caused myself a lifelong penalty or am I okay.

You are correct. YOu don’t have to sign up for ANY part of Medicare as long as you have comparable coverage. I dont’ know where you think you saw that on my website.

And, if you are contributing to an HSA, you REALLY don’t want to sign up for any part of Medicare, because you can no longer contribute if you do.
