Disability to retirement

By Terry Savage on December 18, 2025 | Social Security

I am about to have a disability application hearing tomorrow and just learned that if my application/hearing is successful, that I may not be able to delay receiving Social Security benefits until age 70. Is this true? If I was able to stop the start of SSA benefits from starting at age 67 ( August 31, 2026), will this affect the amount of my Social Security payout at age 70? Thank you!

Terry Says

Disability benefits automatically convert to SS benefits when you reach your full retirement age. The disability benefit you receive is equal to the SS benefit you would get at FRA, so the check amount won’t change (except for some exceptions such as if you are receiving workers comp).

And once you get your full SS benefit, you can earn an unlimited amount of money (unlike the restrictions for those receiving SSDI.

You say your hearing is tomorrow. If you are fortunate enough to qualify for SSDI just take the benefit and say thank you.
I could research the ability to return the benefits at age 67 and postpone until age 70. I just don’t know the answer to that. But I wouldn’t mess around with it!
